Introduction to CIT System Updates

CIT System Updates is the place where you can find out about maintenance schedules, system disruptions and other announcements related to Centre for Instructional Technology-administered systems.

These include IVLE, webcasts, Breeze (Adobe Connect), NUS Galleria and others.

There are four ways you can keep tabs on updates:

  1. Visit this site often;

  2. Subscribe to the feed;

  3. Subscribe to email updates; or

  4. Subscribe via Twitter.

Methods 2, 3 and 4 are recommended as you will only receive updates if there are new posts on this site. These updates will be low volume. You can unsubscribe from these at any time.

More about feeds
Feeds are a convenient way of receiving website updates, latest news, new blog posts and any other content which is feed enabled.

To find out more about feeds, you can refer to these excellent guides by Six Apart and BBC News.

For the visually inclined, you can watch Common Craft's RSS in Plain English.

Ready to subscribe to feeds? You'll need a feed reader such as Google Reader or Bloglines.

More about Twitter
Twitter is a microblog. Many people use Twitter to send short updates about what they are doing at the moment. Users can send and receive updates through their personal Twitter page, via third-party desktop software or even through SMS. The ability to update and receive updates via SMS is a major draw.

Even though Twitter was aimed at individuals, many organisations started using it to issue updates to readers/customers. Twitter also started making its way into education. Alan Lew suggests a few uses of Twitter in Higher Education.

To receive SMS updates from CIT System Updates, you will have to:

  1. Create a Twitter account.

  2. Set up your mobile phone to work with Twitter: Go to Settings > Phone & IM.

  3. Ensure notifications are sent to phone: You can do this from your Twitter home page.

  4. Follow CIT System Updates on Twitter.

  5. Ensure that SMS notifications from CIT Website Update is on. Note: If you follow many Twitter users, you might want to put this setting to off for the other users.

Remember that Twitter is just one way to subscribe to updates; there's always the email subscription or the feed. Do note that Twitter is an external service. CIT is not responsible for Twitter's availability or reliability.
