Video
Conferencing in NUS
In NUS, video conferencing is used
to enhance teaching, learning, research and industrial collaboration
Usage of the video conferencing is prominent in
the following situations:
Specialist
lectures
NUS is able to receive specialist lectures form distinguished speakers
overseas through video conferencing. At the same time, NUS staff
have also participated in seminars overseas while at NUS.
Distance
learning and coursework delivery
Video conferencing is used in programmes like the NUS
Singapore – MIT Alliance (SMA), CMIT Technopreneurship
Programme, Cornell-NUS Executive Programme, Harvard-NUS Master in
Public Policy Programme and Stanford-NUS Business Executive Programme.
Other notable distance learning programmes using video conferencing
are John Hopkins and NUH in the Oncology Videoconference Series;
academic discussions between Logistic Institute-Asia Pacific (NUS)
and Georgia Institute of Technology; and more recently the study
of Comparative Environmental Law by professors at NUS and at Pace
University School of Law, New York.
Good video conferencing techniques and expertise
will ensure that the quality of distance learning programmes are
sustainable and generate more interaction between the lecturers
and students even at different physical settings.
Meetings,
presentations and collaborations
Video conferencing is used in meetings between research collaborators
for consultation and monitoring of progress on a periodic basis.
There has also been usage of video conferencing in other areas such
as board meeting, MOU discussion, PhD Oral exams, Joint Projects
planning and Administrative Consultation.
CIT is further able to conduct video conferencing
sessions around the campus, on locations with ISDN or OP lines,
e.g. University Cultural Centre Theatre. This is possible with a
portable codec (coder-decoder).
In future development, Lecture Theatre 27 and 25
are expected to be equipped for video conferencing sessions come
July 2002. LT 11 will be ready by July 2003.
