Module Information Database Project
How Registrar's Office use live IVLE database to keep module information up-to-date

The Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) provides a prominent view of module related information that is normally embedded within the NUS enterprise data warehouses. As such it has received much feedback for both staff and student users, demanding that the information presented be current and accurate. The IVLE team has therefore been on a quest for better integration and update with the enterprise databases.

The Registrar's Office (RO) recently approached the Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT), developers of IVLE, to explore a mechanism of sharing a single data source for module information.

In the search for a mechanism to provide current module information which can also be updated easily, the RO team discovered that IVLE was already empowering lecturers to update their own module information.

As such, the two units embarked on a project to develop a centralized data source for module information. This set of basic module information includes: module code, module title, cross listing, module credit, preclusions, prerequisites and description.

The lecturer using IVLE will now get the basic module information which is extracted from the common data store. The lecturer can add to the basic module information by providing further details like schedule, text and readings etc which are captured into IVLE.

At the same time, Registrar's Office will also be able to extract module information from this database for their online NUS Bulletine website. Currently, a representative will be esponsible to ensure that the information in the data store is correct and up to date.
