Students Give CS1101 Thumbs Up

CS1101 - Programme Methodology, was nominated as having the best use of technology in teaching. In a survey on the use of IVLE, CS1101, by Dr Heng Aik Koan, Department of Computer Science, received thumbs up from the most students as having the best use of IVLE tools, well-designed and frequent update of course website. These features translate to an enriching experience for students learning on the Web.

Dr Heng shares his experience on building his website for students:

"Firstly, I have always encouraged my students to fully make use of the IVLE forum for discussions. The discussion foum is an especially useful tool for peer-to-peer interaction, as many of their seniors also visit the forum to provide tips and help related to the course subject.

I have also conducted a few quizes using the IVLE quiz system, and actually made several suggestions to the developers on how to improve the 'user-friendly' aspect of the system. Being a user, I know what I want, and developers have been very receptive and helpful in that area.

In every lecture, I would always try to solve an application together with my students, using the workstations in the LT. The students really enjoyed these sessions, and at the very least, it helps to explain the concepts more clearly.
You have to be brave enough to want to develop and implement an application for 600 plus students without the help of lecture notes. This is especially so if you have to do it in a short time; your brains would really need to be 'on-the-go'."
