Secure Assessment allows you to access the IVLE Assessment tool in a secure online environment. This secure online environment, combined with a controlled examination location allows closed-book assessments to be carried out in IVLE. Juniper SSL VPN is the technology which enables this service. Secure Assessment would not be possible without support from Computer Centre, who provide network assistance.
What is the purpose of this service?
With Secure Assessment, you can conduct an online assessment in a cheat-proof environment. It disables all external communication and input/output devices, thus preventing:
Web surfing
Sending or receiving of emails, instant messages and other media
Transferring of files and information to or from an internal or external hard disk, thumb drives or any other external removable media
Viewing of other IVLE tools
Viewing of external links (Secure Assessment questions cannot link to outside resources and URLs.)
Besides the prevention of these activities, any attempt to access resources other than the Secure Assessment will slow down the computer to a crawl, resulting in less time for the student to complete the assessment.
Furthermore, attempts to log out from the Secure Desktop are logged. An Administrator login is required to return to the Secure Assessment.
How to apply for Secure Assessment?
The Secure Assessment option has been added in the Assessment tool (click the image below for a larger screenshot).
If you select Yes and click Apply, take note of the following:
An automatic Secure Assessment Request email will be sent to the IVLE Administrator with details of your UserID, module code, the title of the assessment and the date and time of the assessment.
You need to identify and book a PC Cluster – with sufficient seating capacity for your students - that will be used for the assessment. Email the IVLE administrator, informing us of the PC Cluster’s location, on successful booking.
The Administrator will arrange for the Secure Desktop software to be installed and tested on the PCs.
A test run of the Secure Assessment before the examination is highly recommended.
